Does root canal treatment hurt?

The main purpose of endodontic procedures is to relieve pain caused by pulp inflammation or infection. With modern techniques and specially developed anaesthetic and instruments, the vast majority of patients report they are completely comfortable and relaxed during their procedure. If you are anxious, please let us know. We have sedation options available to reduce any anxiety you may be feeling towards your treatment.

What is root canal treatment?

In the past, once bacteria associated with decay, trauma or gum disease had entered the centre of a tooth, the infection that they caused meant that the tooth had to be extracted. The technology to effectively clean and disinfect the root canal system (tiny channels running inside the tooth) did not exist. Endodontic treatment is a safe and effective treatment that enables you to save your tooth from extraction.

What is an endodontist?

An endodontist is a dentist who has completed a minimum of three years advanced training (postgraduate degree) and is registered as a specialist with the Dental Board of Australia. Endodontists are experts in root canal treatment and other procedures involving the dental pulp and root canal system (the internal structures of a tooth). Being dental specialists, endodontists only treat root canal problems. This means they have specialised equipment and vast experience in this area.
